Wider use of magnesium alloys to house EV batteries could lend support China ferro-silicon prices, sources say [corrected]

The move to reduce the weight of electric vehicles (EVs) is providing an opportunity for manufacturers of magnesium alloys, which are far lighter than the aluminium and steel currently used to house EV batteries, which could, in turn, support ferro-silicon prices, Fastmarkets understands.

At present, EV battery boxes are either 1.2-1.5mm welded, stamped steel steel plate or aluminum alloy, which have poor heat dissipation qualities in addition to being heavier than magnesium alloys....
