Brazil's Vale plans to set up low-carbon steelmaking hub at Porto Açu

Brazilian miner Vale has signed an agreement with Porto Açu, to build an industrial complex at the port in Rio de Janeiro state, where it plans to eventually use renewable energy to produce hot-briquetted iron (HBI) using pellets or its new, “green,” iron ore briquette.

HBI, which can be made from iron ore pellets or briquettes, is considered a “green” raw material for steelmaking because its use as a substitute for scrap in electric-arc furnaces...
